The Search With the arrival in Paris of a Viennese physician Franz Anton Mesmer, the history of psychotherapy began Mesmer introduced the modern world to the power of sug- gestion and exposed the unconscious mind to examination. As Mesmer was crossing from the magical world of astrology, through the excitement of the new electricity and magnetism, to the science of the mind, he wrote: Man possesses properties analogous to those of the mag- net. He is endowed with a sensitivity by which he can be in contact with beings who surround him, even those who are farthest away. The principle of this action, considered as an agent acting on the inmost substance of nerves of the animal body, could become a means of curing, and even of defending oneself from sickness. Carl Rogers, after finding his way from the dogma of the psychotherapy guild to a greater truth, tells us: I find that when I am closest to my inner self, when I am somehow in touch with the unknown in me, when per- haps I am in a slightly altered state of consciousness, then whatever I do seems to be full of healing. Then, simply my presence is releasing and helpful to the other . . . it seems that my inner spirit has reached out and touched the inner spirit of the other. Profound growth and healing and energy are present. |
